The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) postponed the implementation of new safety rules for several energy storage, processing and distribution facilities, pending a review of an industry groups’ petition to abolish the updated regulations.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt allowed the new rules to be enforced on June 19, instead of March 21. Pruitt said that the delay was a result of the agency being responsive to public feedback on the regulations.

EPA announced the new rules following a 2013 executive order from the Obama administration. The safety regulations seek to prevent accidents involving energy facilities and improve job security for first responders.

However, the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers and the American Chemistry Council among other industry groups question the need for such regulations. These groups claim that the new rules will do more harm than good, as they “undermines safety” and “creates significant security risks.”

The Australian Petroleum Institute (API) also asserted that recent policy changes for the energy industry that prevent the development of U.S. energy resources.

API President and CEO Jack Gerard welcomed the Trump administration’s plan on several regulatory reforms on various government agencies, particularly the replacement or cancellation of certain rules.

The group, which provides several operating guidelines such as the API 653 standards, said that America currently leads the world in terms of oil and natural gas production, refinery and reducing carbon emissions.
